THE OFFENCE OF DRUG SUPPLY IN NSW

Over 100 people were arrested in NSW as part of NSW Police’s ‘Dial-a-Dealer’ operation, which occurred over three weekends throughout November and December 2024.

The police operation targeted alleged ‘dial-a-dealer’ networks in Sydney and saw the arrest of 108 people, 64 of which were charged with the offence of supplying a prohibited drug, and 44 of which were charged with drug possession offences. One person was charged with domestic violence related crimes.

During the operation, police seized $20,000 worth of illicit drugs, which included almost 560 grams of cocaine. Also seized as part of the police operation were more than 27 grams of MDMA, 467 grams of cannabis, 450 grams of THC edibles, 3.5 grams of ketamine and 0.7 milligrams of ice.

Five vehicles and over $90,000 were also seized under asset confiscation protocols during the operation.

The three weekends throughout November and December 2024 focussed on street-level distributors committing the offence of drug supply.

MAN AND WOMAN CHARGED WITH OFFENCE OF DRUG SUPPLY

As part of the sting, an 18-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were arrested on 7 December 2024 after police stopped and searched their vehicle in Gymea. Police allegedly found 10 bags of cocaine, $1415 in cash and a can of pepper spray.

The woman was charged with two counts of supply prohibited drug and one count each of possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit and deal with property proceeds of crime. She was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Sutherland Local Court on 9 January 2025.

The man was charged with two counts of supply a prohibited drug and one count of deal with property proceeds of crime. He appeared before Parramatta Court on 8 December 2024 and was granted conditional bail. He is set to appear before Sutherland Local Court on 9 January 2025.

TARGETING OF OFFENCE OF DRUG SUPPLY TO CONTINUE

NSW Police intend to continue targeting people committing the offence of drug supply in NSW, with NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna stating that the targeted operation would continue in 2025. He promised that resources would be put into disrupting the operations of major, mid-level and low-level drug suppliers and that prosecutions will occur.

Section 25 of the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985 (NSW) makes it a criminal offence to supply or knowingly take part in the supply of a prohibited drug.

WHAT ARE THE PENALTIES FOR THE OFFENCE OF DRUG SUPPLY IN NSW?

Trafficable Quantity: If you are convicted of the offence of drug supply of trafficable quantities, you may face a maximum penalty of $11,000 and/or 2 years imprisonment.

Indictable Quantity: If you are convicted of the offence of drug supply with indictable quantities, you may be liable for a maximum penalty of $220,000 and/or 15 years imprisonment in the District Court. If the matter is dealt with the Local Court, the maximum penalty is $11,000 fine and/or 2 years imprisonment.

Commercial Quantity: If you are convicted of the offence of drug supply of commercial quantities of prohibited substances, you may face a maximum penalty of $385,00 and/or 20 years imprisonment.

Large Commercial Quantity: If you are convicted of the offence of drug supply of large commercial quantities of illegal drugs, you may face a maximum penalty of a fine of up to $550,000 and/or life imprisonment.
