SAYET ERHAN AKCA SUSPECTED TO BE MASTERMIND OF FAKE CARAVAN TERROR PLOT

Sayet Erhan Akca is suspected by Police to have been the mastermind behind the fake caravan terror plot that saw a caravan full of explosives located on the side of the road in Dural.

The plan is alleged to have involved organising the purchase of a caravan, have it placed with explosives and written material of anti-Semitic nature, have it left in a specific location and then inform law enforcement about an impending terror attack against Jewish Australians.

The alleged purpose of such a plan by Mr Akca was to use the hoax caravan plot and related anti-Semitic attacks as a bargaining tool and leverage for a lenient court outcome regarding his drug importation and dealing with proceeds of crime charges, by providing information about the fabricated terror plot to police.

Mr Akca is suspected to be the mastermind of a serious of anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney since October 2024, which included the firebombing of a childcare centre at Maroubra and graffiti attacks on homes and cars in the eastern suburbs.

Mr Akca remains overseas, where he is alleged to have fled while on bail charged with the serious indictable criminal offences of drug importation and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

NSW GOVERNMENT CRITICISED FOR THEIR RESPONSES TO FAKE CARAVAN TERROR PLOT

State Government politicians are facing criticism for their responses to what turned out to be a fake caravan terror plot.

When the public was made aware of the caravan and purported threats to the Jewish Australian community, NSW Premier Chris Minns labelled it “a potential mass casualty event” and NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley said the introduction of new legislation would help law enforcement to crack down on rising hate crimes and anti-Semitic attacks across the city.

The response from the NSW Premier and NSW Police Minister is in hindsight surprising and contrary to what investigators believed at the time, with Deputy Commissioner Barrett recently stating that investigators within the joint counterterrorism team investigating the caravan believed “almost immediately” it was part of “a fabricated terrorist plot“.

CALLS FOR NEW LEGISLATION TO BE REVERSED

Noting that the NSW Government passed laws concerning hate speech and places of worship amidst the context of anti-Semitic attacks which were later found to be orchestrated by organised criminals, and not the result of anti-Semitic ideology, the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, with backing from the NSW Greens, have called for a legislative inquiry into whether the parliament and public were misled before the hate speech and places of worship bills were passed. Alternatively, they demand that the legislation be repealed.

DUTTON CRITICISED FOR RESPONSE TO FAKE CARAVAN TERROR PLOT

Federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton was criticised by Federal Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke for not taking up the opportunity of a briefing which was held the day after the fake caravan terror plot was revealed to the public. Shortly after the briefing, Dutton stated that the incident could have been the “most catastrophic terrorist attack in our country’s history”.

Mr Dutton was accused of deliberately keeping himself in the dark on key details that had indicated the terror plot was fake and orchestrated by organised crime.
